Medical Marijuana

So, what about the use of Marijuana for Epilepsy ?
There has recently been coverage of Marijuana used for Medical Reasons in the New Zealand media. People have had success with the use of Marijuana. Some parents have approached the Government with their Medical Situation, to see if they could explore the use of Marijuana. Some people have taken the law into their own hands, or looked to going overseas. It’s not only Epilepsy where Marijuana can help. Other conditions where it’s said to assist include Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s Disease, Breast Cancer, Brain Cancer, Lou Gehrig Disease, Insomnia, and even Asthma. Marijuana has been made legal in at least 20 U.S states. The rules differ between states. Eg : some states you can only use for medical reasons, whereas some are for medical and recreational use. When you look around the rest of the world it is still illegal in most countries. There are trials currently taking place. There is a new cannabis based drug called Epidiolex. This is being tested on children with different forms of Epilepsy. The children in this trial ( 60 ) have had a drop in seizures, but some show side effects such as sleepiness and fatigue. The drug is in a liquid form. Epidiolex has only been tested on American children so far, but trials are expected to be expanded into Europe. One fear I have is as Marijuana used gets used more medically, people who use Marijuana for pleasure will see this as a window to continue to use. There needs to be a line drawn in the sand so to speak between legal use and medical use. This should happen once drugs are developed more. Maybe in the future Marijuana will be legal around the world. There have been pushes for Marijuana to be legal here in New Zealand. It would save the Taxpayer hugely. Many dollars go into enforcing the illegality of it. But lets face some facts. As Marijuana is today, it is a harmful drug. Marijuana harms in many ways, and young people are the most vulnerable. Use of it can lead to significant health, safety, social and learning or behavioral problems. Marijuana leads to changes to the brain , similar to Cocaine, Heroin and Alcohol. It disrupts movement of chemicals through our brains. It was once thought that Marijuana wasn’t harmful. Regular use has been shown to lead to long term problems, such as poor academic performance and poor work performance. Marijuana can also be associated with poor sexual performance. This can also be associated with Alcohol. So, even though some men think that Alcohol and Marijuana make them masculine, it can have quite the opposite effect. I am very proud to say that I have never used Marijuana. A lot of people have the attitude that it was something that you “had a go at” at some stage during your younger years. But, I never “had a go” because firstly, it is illegal, and secondly, it’s bad for your health. Simple as that. But from a parents point of view, I can understand how it would feel if you had a very sick child, one that was perhaps having several seizures a day. You would do anything to stop that, to improve their situation as much as possible. My heart goes out to them. So, maybe there is two sides to Marijuana. Who knows where we will be in 10-20 years .
